The story of Eldest is the sequel to the book Eragon. The story takes place in a a land called Alagaesia.

The history of Alagaesia is a very long one. It starts out over 1000 years ago. The humans were the first race to arrive. The humans lived here for approximately 100 years but died out after that. Then the Elves arrived in Alagaesia . After the Elves had arrived there was a huge war with the dragons.

One day a young Elf named Eragon discovered a white dragon. This young boy became the first dragon rider. This ended the war between the dragons and the Elves and started the system of the riders. The riders became the peacekeepers of Alagaesia.

During the war the Dwarves arrived and they too were under the authority of the dragon riders. Later the humans came back, and some of them became riders too. The era of the dragon riders continued for over a 100 years before the story of Eragon takes place.

At the end of the era of the riders, a young man named Galbatorix was going through training to be a rider. He and a friend took a trip through the Hadarac desert. Here they met a terrrible enemy. The enemy killed everyone but Galbatorix, who was badly injured.  In spite of his injures, Galbatorix trekked for many months to finally reach the headquarters of the riders. Once he got there he demanded that he be given another dragon.

The riders council recognized his manic desire and did not agree to his demand.  They sent him away.  Galbatorix became angry and killed every rider who would not join him.  From one of the dead riders, he took a new black dragon, Shruiken.  Only thirteen riders joined him.  They were called the Forsworn.

Morzan was the first Forsworn and was also the last one to die. As the years progressed the Forsworn died out through various means. The old storyteller, Brom (once a dragon rider), who Eragon rode with until he died, killed the last of the Forswron, Morzan. Now as the story of Eragon starts, the only known remaining rider is Galbatorix.

Are you wondering what happened to the Elves and the Dwarves? During the war both races chose to seclude themselves in their own private domains. The Elves went to the mysterious forest Du Weldenvarden, and the Dwarves went into their mountain hideout, where they remained secluded for over 100 years.
